Classification of Atherosclerotic Carotid Plaques Using Gray Level Morphological Analysis on Ultrasound images

چکیده
The aim of this study was to investigate the usefiilness of gray scale morphological analysis in the assessment of atherosclerotic carotid plagues. Ultrasound images were recorded from 137 asymptomatic and 137 symptomatic plaques (Stroke, Transient Ischaemic Attack -TIA, Amaurosis Fugax-AF). The morphological pattern spectra of gray scale images were computed and two different classifiers named the Probabilistic Neural Network (PNN) and the Support Vector Machine (S VM) were evaluated for classifying these spectra into two classes: asymptomatic or symptomatic. The highest percentage of correct classifications score was 66,8% and was achieved using the SVM classifier. This score is slightly lower than texture analysis carried out on the same data set.

A Comparative Study of Morphological and other Texture Features for the Characterization of Atherosclerotic Carotid Plaques
The extraction of features characterizing the structure of atherosclerotic carotid plaques, obtained by high-resolution ultrasound imaging is important for the correct plaque classification and the estimation of the risk of stroke. In this study morphological features were extracted and compared with the well-known texture features spatial gray level dependence matrices (SGLDM), gray level diff...
متن کاملImage Retrieval and Classification of Carotid Plaque Ultrasound Images
The extraction of multiple features from high-resolution ultrasound images of atherosclerotic carotid plaques, characterizing the plaque morphology and structure can be used for the classification and retrieval of similar plaques and the identification of individuals with asymptomatic carotid stenosis at risk of stroke. The objective of this work was to develop an automated image retrieval and ...
متن کاملCharacterization of Carotid Artery Plaques Using Real-time Compound B-mode Ultrasound
Background and Purpose—Real-time compound ultrasound imaging is a new technique for improving the image quality of B-mode scanning. We investigated the value of this method for the characterization of atherosclerotic plaques in the internal carotid artery. Methods—Thirty-two patients (22 men, 10 women; mean age, 75 years) with plaques of the internal carotid artery as identified by high-resolut...
متن کاملEcho-lucency of computerized ultrasound images of carotid atherosclerotic plaques are associated with increased levels of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins as well as increased plaque lipid content.
BACKGROUND Echo-lucency of carotid atherosclerotic plaques on computerized ultrasound B-mode images has been associated with a high incidence of brain infarcts as evaluated on CT scans. We tested the hypotheses that triglyceride-rich lipoproteins in the fasting and postprandial state predict carotid plaque echo-lucency and that echo-lucency predicts a high plaque lipid content. METHODS AND RE...
متن کاملAutomatic classification of Non-alcoholic fatty liver using texture features from ultrasound images
Background: Accurate and early detection of non-alcoholic fatty liver, which is a major cause of chronic diseases is very important and is vital to prevent the complications associated with this disease. Ultrasound of the liver is the most common and widely performed method of diagnosing fatty liver. However, due to the low quality of ultrasound images, the need for an automatic and intelligent...
